Bhutan is an agrarian society. The Bhutanese culture is largely influenced by agriculture. Agriculture is an important part of Bhutanese economy. So is travel business. However, the impact of travel business on agriculture is barely explored. The benefit of travel business has been reaped mostly by tour company owners, hotel industry and supporting arms of travel industry.
Agro-travelling is one of the approaches of inclusive travel practices. Defying the conventional approach of tourism in Bhutan, agro-travel by concept is a style or an approach where travellers spent their vacation mostly on farms. During this period, depending on travellers, they could choose to be farmers literally. Travellers could stay at farmers’ house, eat with farmers and do household chores together, instead of luxury hotels. All charges will be paid to the farmers, giving farmers an opportunity to make money. Such travel is a pro-poor travel business approach which could help in alleviating poverty at leisure expense of travellers.
Thus, there will be mix of agro travel including the existing and more common cultural, religious and outdoors travelling. Therefore, we encourage our visitors to experience the agricultural life in Bhutan by taking more of agro-cultural tours.
